What a shame. Mike had just made his son, Justin, a member of the corporation, too.

The lawsuit I recently filed against Mike Burns, Camelback Consign & Design, Vera Manuz and Justin Burns has only been served on Justin, to date.

It appears his father has left him holding the bag. Poor Justin. He was so devoted to his father. I clearly recall his laughing at me as I carried my sign protesting his father's larcenous behavior back and forth in front of the store last January.

I hope someone in that sad, sad family will draw the right conclusions from this terrible circumstance and restore the honor of the family and the family name.

People die. But web pages, it is said, are likely to last much, much longer than flesh & blood or mortal memory. May this serve as a reminder to all who encounter Michael S. and Justin Burns until their debts are paid in full... and with interest.

BBB FINALLY DROPS THE BIG ONE!

Published: February 15, 2014
Updated: 3/23/14

For more details, see the blog posts listed at the bottom of this page.

Mike Burns promised to pay me. I, in turn, promised to stop publishing information and comments about Camelback Consign and Design. Mike Burns failed to pay me as promised. Thus, I no longer feel compelled to abstain from sharing info pertinent to CAMELBACK CONSIGN & DESIGN.
After months of cajoling by yours truly... and a mere three weeks after a letter directly to the  new president  and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, Inc., Mary E. Power, the BBB quietly updated its Business Review for Camelback Consign and Design. You'll see it below, with my annotations.

By the way, I never received a written response from Mary E. Power to my letter of 1/19/14. But then, responsiveness doesn't appear to be part of the BBB's self-selected mandate. I am, nonetheless, quite grateful. The BBB did the right thing. It just took far too long to do it.

The "F" Bomb Falls

Less than a year ago, the BBB showed an A- rating for Camelback Consign and Design and designated it a BBB Accredited Business Since 8/13/2010. See for yourself:

Unfortunately, this particular view also included a negative review.

That was then. This is now:

The BBB made it official. It gave Camelback Consign and Design the lowest rating it can for frequent and flagrant disregard of the fundamentals of good business ethics: F.  "F" as in Flunk, Failure, Fallen, Futile, and "Fugget about it." As in Fooey and Foe and Fundamentally Flawed.

In short, the BBB now warns the public that Camelback Consign and Design isn't well run.
Based on my experience, it seems appropriate. It's also a damned shame. A good business has turned into a predatory business.

And, by the way, the BBB has updated the fourth line of its Reason for Rating section, as seen above. It now reads > 3 complaints filed against business that were not resolved.

It also lists two negative reviews. The same individual cannot file a Customer Review and a Customer Complaint. So the situation may be even worse than it looks at first glance.

The latest complaint on the BBB website

The latest complaint on the BBB website regarding Camelback Consign and Design
 - not mine - is dated 12/11/13.

Complaint: Owner ******* ***** of Camelback Consign and Design has failed to pay me for furniture that was consigned and sold as agreed in a written contract. He has made payment of $30,000.00 issued on 10/9/13 in two separate checks. Both immediately bounced.. Mr. ***** has put in writing that the $30,000.00 would be made good, that has never happened. In addition, I am owed an additional $45,000.00 for furniture already sold. He has acknowledged both in our contract as well as in and additional written correspondence that those funds are also over due. These facts appear not to be in dispute. In addition, I believe there are even more funds due to me from even more furniture that has been sold. Mr. ***** has acknowledged this verbally. The Camelback Consign and Design Contract, signed by ******* *****, copies of bounced checks and written correspondence acknowledging funds owed to me can be reviewed at any time.Desired Settlement: Bad checks made good funds due paidBBB's Final Determination: Business failed to respond to the BBB to resolve or address the complaint issues.
Apparently, when it comes to Camelback Consign and Design, I'm  not the biggest loser after all. That's cold comfort to someone who has been burned as badly as I have.

Don't forget to tip a hat to Ms. Indispensable, Vera Manuz, either. Where would Mike be without her?

A CALL TO A HIGHER POWER:

MARY E. POWER, PRESIDENT & CEO

RE: NR Rating

Honorable President,

I apologize for this personal appeal so soon after your recent appointment. I well understand that your agenda is already packed.

However, I believe the following warrants immediate attention as it goes directly to BBB credibility.

The crux of the issue is this, copied from a Council of BBB letter to me, just received:

The firm I complained to the BBB about was assigned an NR rating on 11/19. Today, interested parties still can’t view past consumer reports about this firm previously available through the BBB website. This doesn’t correspond to the promise incorporated in the BBB’s Mission Statement. “BBB is the resource to turn to for objective, unbiased information on businesses.”

In short, valuable reference information about firms in non-compliance with BBB standards is automatically withheld from the public for an indeterminate amount of time. Further, the NR rating isn’t accompanied by a clear explanation of its meaning to the viewer. See below:

The unintended result is that while firms with an NR rating are able to continue doing business, consumers are deprived of the invaluable resource that a BBB Business Review would otherwise represent.

The well-being of a great many people depends on the keywords - honesty, integrity and trust -that feature so prominently in the BBB’s Mission description. Individuals disinterested in ethical (business) behavior will surely take quick and full advantage of the opportunities afforded them in the absence of oversight and enforcement.

I know it. You know it. The owners of NR rated firms know it. The only folks yet to catch on are the ones most likely to become the next victims of unethical behavior.

To make matters worse, from my perspective, the January 14, 2014, BBB letter authored by Marissa May, Manager of Dispute Resolution Services, contains this noteworthy paragraph, as well.

Such a statement does no credit to the reputation of the BBB. Ms. May apparently believes that the BBB either shouldn’t divulge the reasons for the policy I question or that I am incapable of understanding them. She certainly makes no effort to clarify the policy.

I dare say that Ms. May, on this day, wasn’t feeling quite in tune with the BBB Mission Statement, which includes the following assertions:

  • We provide educational information and expert advice that is free of charge and easily accessible.”
  • “BBB is the resource to turn to for objective, unbiased information on businesses.”
  • Be accountable to the general public, our members, and to each other for everything we do.”
The public needs a source of information it can trust. And right now, based on my experience, it appears that source will not be the BBB.

Please forward this to those colleagues and senior managers in your organization who might be able to respond appropriately to the issues described.

Sincerely yours,

Glenn S. Michaels
